A $40 INSURANCE FEE WILL BE POSTED TO EACH STUDENT'S POWERSCHOOL ACCOUNT WITHIN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS OF SCHOOL. IF A STUDENT'S PARENT FILLS OUT AN APPLICATION FOR EDUCATIONAL BENEFITS FORM AND QUALIFIES FOR BENEFITS (ex. FREE-REDUCED PRICE LUNCH), THIS FEE WILL BE REDUCED TO $20. IF A STUDENT'S PARENT CHOOSES TO DECLINE THE INSURANCE OPTION FOR THEIR STUDENT USING A SCHOOL ISSUED CHROMEBOOK, THE CHROMEBOOK AGREEMENT AND INSURANCE FORM SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO THE MAIN OFFICE INDICATING SUCH. IF A STUDENT IS NOT USING A SCHOOL ISSUED CHROMEBOOK, THEY SHOULD NOTIFY THE MAIN OFFICE TO HAVE THE INSURANCE FEE REMOVED FROM THEIR ACCOUNT.
OWNERSHIP OF THE CHROMEBOOK
The Proctor Public Schools retains sole right of possession of the Chromebook. The Chromebooks are lent to the students for educational purposes only for the academic year. Moreover, Proctor Public Schools administrative staff and faculty retain the right to collect and/or inspect Chromebooks at any time, including via electronic remote access and to alter, add, or delete installed software or hardware.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CHROMEBOOK
Students are solely responsible for the Chromebooks issued to them and must adhere to the following:
Students must comply with District Policy 524: Internet Acceptable Use and Safety and this Chromebook Agreement when using their Chromebooks.
Students must bring their Chromebooks to school every day and make sure it is fully charged. Failure to do so may result in disciplinary action. (Note: a fully charged Proctor Chromebook should last the full school day.)
Students must treat their device with care and never leave it in an unsecured location.
Students must promptly report any problems with their Chromebook to the building media center ("The Crossing").
Students may not remove or interfere with the serial number and other identification tags.
Students may not attempt to remove or change the physical structure of the Chromebook, including the keys, screen cover, or plastic casing.
Students may not attempt to install or run any operating system on the Chromebook other than the ChromeOS operating system supported by the district.
Students must keep their device clean and must not touch the screen with anything (e.g., your finger, pen, pencil, etc.) other than approved computer screen cleaners.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR ELECTRONIC DATA
Students are responsible for backing up their data to protect from loss. Users of District Technology have no rights, ownership, or expectations of privacy to any data that is, or was, stored on the Chromebook, school network, or any school-issued applications and are given no guarantees that data will be retained or destroyed.
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Students must follow the six conditions of being a good digital citizen:
Respect Yourself - I will show respect for myself through my actions. I will select online names that are appropriate, I will consider the information and images that I post online. I will consider what personal information about my life, experiences, experimentation or relationships I post. I will not be obscene. I will act with integrity.
Protect Yourself - I will ensure that the information, images and materials I post online will not put me at risk. I will not publish my personal details, contact details or a schedule of my activities. I will report any attacks or inappropriate behavior directed at me while online. I will protect passwords, accounts and resources.
Respect Others - I will show respect to others. I will not use electronic mediums to antagonize, bully, harass or stalk other people. I will show respect for other people in my choice of websites, I will not visit sites that are degrading, pornographic, racist or inappropriate. I will not abuse my rights of access and I will not enter other people's private online accounts and websites.
Protect Others - I will protect others by reporting abuse, not forwarding inappropriate materials or communications. I will avoid unacceptable materials and conversations.
Respect Intellectual Property - I will request permission to use copyrighted or otherwise protected materials. I will suitably cite any and all use of websites, books, media etc. I will acknowledge all primary sources. I will validate information.
Protect Intellectual Property - I will request to use the software and media others produce. I will use free and open source alternatives rather than pirating software. I will purchase my music and media, and refrain from distributing these in a manner that violates their licenses.
SPARE EQUIPMENT AND LENDING
If a student’s Chromebook is inoperable, the school has a limited number of spare devices for use while the student’s Chromebook is repaired or replaced. This agreement remains in effect for loaner computers. The student may not opt to keep an inoperable Chromebook to avoid doing class work due to loss or damage. If a student does not bring his/her Chromebook to school, the student may be required to borrow a device from the school based on the direction from his/her teacher. Disciplinary action may result for failure to bring a fully charged Chromebook to school.
WARRANTY AND INSURANCE
The District will repair or replace damaged equipment resulting from normal use. All other breakages will be the responsibility of the student to pay for. The District will make its best attempt to purchase replacement parts at the best possible price. Loss or theft of the device is also the student’s responsibility and will result in the student being charged the full $200 replacement cost to purchase a new device. Optional insurance through the school district will be available for students and their families to purchase.
OPTIONAL INSURANCE INFORMATION
The Proctor Public School District recognizes the need to protect the District’s investment in the Google Chromebooks and to protect families from expenses from theft or damage of the Chromebook assigned to students. Therefore, the District is offering families a choice of optional insurance. Parents must indicate their decision on for their student to participate in the Google Chromebook program.
OPTION 1: SCHOOL INSURANCE
Families may purchase a $40 non-refundable insurance policy though the District. This will include coverage for hardware failure, theft, repair, accidental damage including screen repairs, and liquid damage. It does not include deliberate or negligent damage to the Chromebook and does not cover the case, charger or cord.
September – June 8, 2022 (Last Day of School) Insurance Rate: $40 with $0 deductible
Effective Coverage: Immediately when student receives their Chromebook if payment for insurance has been received.
Expiration Date: June 8, 2022 or the day a student withdraws from school. Whichever comes first. If a student withdraws from the Proctor School District for any reason, this insurance agreement becomes null and void on that date. There are no refunds once this agreement becomes active on the date the Chromebook is issued. Devices not returned on the date of withdrawal will be reported stolen.
Coverage
Accidental Damage: Pays for accidental damage caused by liquid spills, drops, cracked screens, or any other unintentional event.
Liquid Submersion
Vandalism
Theft: Pays for loss or damage due to theft. The claim requires a police report to be filed within 48 hours.
Fire: Pays for loss or damage of the Chromebook due to fire. The claim must be accompanied by an official fire report from the investigating authority.
Electrical Surge: Pays for damage to the device due to an electrical surge.
Natural Disasters: Pays for loss or damage caused by natural disasters.
Exclusions
Dishonest, Fraudulent, Intentional, Negligent or Criminal Acts: Will not pay if damage or loss occurs in conjunction with a dishonest, fraudulent, intentional, negligent or criminal act. The student/ parent will be responsible for the full amount of the repair/replacement.
Consumables: including but not limited to the charger and software. (See replacement costs below.)
Cosmetic damage that does not affect the functionality of the device. This includes but is not limited to scratches, dents, and broken plastic ports or port covers.
“Jailbreaking” or otherwise voiding the manufacturer’s warranty by altering the software.
The District is not liable for any loss, damage (including incidental, consequential or punitive damages) or expenses caused directly or indirectly by the equipment.
Non-Covered Items
Replacement Costs Chromebook AC Adapter - $35
NOTICE: Caution Against Fraud Any person who, with intent to defraud or knowing that he/she is facilitating a fraud against an insurer, submits an application or files a claim containing a false or deceptive statement is guilty of insurance fraud, a Federal Offense.
OPTION #2: NO INSURANCE
Families may choose to not insure the Chromebook and will be responsible for the full value of the Chromebook or repairs.
Replacement or repair fees will be assessed for lost or damaged Chromebooks according to the following estimates:
Replacement cost for District provided Chromebook = $200
Replacement cost for District provided Chromebook AC Charger = $35
Replacement cost for District provided Chromebook keyboard = $90
Replacement cost for District provided Chromebook screen = $190
Damages to Chromebook or broken screen will be assessed based on the extent of damage.
